Spotify acquires Who Sampled, launching Song DNA to explore music samples, covers, and historical connections in real time

Spotify Technology SA has acquired Who Sampled, the music discovery platform known for tracking samples, covers, and remixes, the company announced on Thursday.

The acquisition will integrate Who Sampled’s technology into Spotify’s new feature, Song DNA, aimed at enhancing listener engagement and historical insight into music.

Who Sampled, founded in 2008 by Nadav Poraz, attracts over one million monthly users and documents the historical connections between songs by linking samples to their original sources.

Under the partnership, the platform will retain its independent brand and website while benefiting from Spotify’s global infrastructure.

Song DNA, the highlight of the collaboration, will allow users to explore a track’s samples, covers, and other musical connections in real time while streaming on Spotify.

The feature represents a major step toward making music production history and attribution instantly accessible to hundreds of millions of Spotify users worldwide.

The acquisition also brings immediate improvements to Who Sampled’s user experience, including the removal of display advertisements, faster moderation of user submissions, and free access to its iOS and Android apps.

A joint statement from the companies said: “Through our recent discussions with Spotify, it became clear that we share a strong belief in the power of musical context – and a vision for helping listeners go deeper into the songs they love.”
