Nigerian global music star Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, on Wednesday, July 2, 2026, made streaming history after becoming the African artist with the highest monthly listeners in Spotify history.

Burna Boy reached 46.84 million monthly listeners on Spotify, surpassing the previous record of 46.58 million held by South African singer Tyla, before further climbing to 47.3 million monthly listeners, according to platform data.

The achievement places him on course to potentially become the first African artist to cross the 50 million monthly listeners threshold on Spotify, a landmark that would further cement his global dominance.

Industry data indicates that the surge in streams has been significantly driven by his collaboration with Colombian superstar Shakira on the World Cup-themed track “Dai Dai”, which has gained massive international traction.

The song recently peaked at number one on Spotify’s Global Top Songs chart, a rare feat for an African artist and one that highlights Burna Boy’s continued crossover appeal in global markets.

The accomplishment also places him in elite company, as the last African artist to top the global Spotify chart was Wizkid, through his 2016 collaboration with Drake on the hit single “One Dance.”
