Omowunmi Aloba Defies Family Amid DNA Dispute

Omowunmi Aloba defies the Aloba family’s order to stop using Mohbad’s surname as DNA dispute over her son’s paternity continues

The Omowunmi Aloba DNA dispute took a new turn on Thursday as Omowunmi, widow of late Afrobeats star Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, openly defied the Aloba family’s directive to stop using their surname pending the outcome of a court-ordered DNA test.

The family, represented by Omolayo Aloba and Mohbad’s father, Joseph Aloba, had issued a formal statement claiming that no statutory or traditional marriage took place between Mohbad and Wunmi Adebanjo, as the necessary Yoruba rites — including payment of the bride price — were never completed.

Consequently, they instructed her to desist from using the Aloba name in both public and private records.

But in what many have described as a bold response, Omowunmi took to Instagram on Thursday, November 13, adding Aloba to her name and writing, “Please patronise Wunmi Aloba oo, Liam Aloba needs to be taken care of,” referring to her son with the late singer.

The Aloba family also announced the appointment of three estate administrators — Ajewole Aloba, Rasaq Famuyiwa and Alonge Aloba — to manage Mohbad’s assets, royalties and intellectual property. They further declared that both mother and child would only be recognised as beneficiaries if the DNA test confirms Mohbad as Liam’s biological father.

Reacting to the family’s stance, Kabir Akingbolu, counsel to the widow, condemned the directive as unconstitutional and sentimental.

“Nobody can stop her from bearing Aloba. That is the name given to her by her husband, and under the law, she has every right to keep it,” Akingbolu said, referencing the Supreme Court’s ruling in Ojukwu vs Ojukwu, which affirmed that no one has monopoly over a surname.

He also accused the family of avoiding the DNA process, insisting that his client remains ready to proceed.

“They are the ones running from the DNA. We have always been ready — even if it’s today or tomorrow, we’ll be there,” he asserted.
