MI Abaga Laments Fraud In Nigerian Music Industry

Nigerian music industry funding from fraud is a national failure, says MI Abaga, who calls for better structures to support young talent

Nigerian music industry funding allegedly linked to internet fraud is a damning reflection of national failure, according to renowned rapper MI Abaga.

Speaking on the So Nigeria Podcast, the hip-hop icon expressed deep concern over the lack of legitimate investment structures for musicians.

He pointed out that many upcoming artists are forced to depend on questionable sources to kickstart their careers.

“It is an indictment on our country that we have such talented musicians, and the major funding for the industry comes from the West and from this other industry,” MI said, referring to cybercrime.

He described the situation as heartbreaking in a country filled with both wealthy individuals and gifted youth.

“Why do we have this situation? Who is to blame? Is it the young people just trying to survive? It is very hard to say this,” he added.

MI’s comments highlight a powerful and uncomfortable truth: the creative economy lacks the support system it needs, forcing artists into dependency on non-traditional — and sometimes illicit — funding streams.

He further clarified that while he does not condone criminal activity, he understands the desperation that drives artists into accepting such support.

“Evil is evil,” he emphasized, “but I empathise with those navigating this harsh landscape without real opportunities.”

The rapper also reflected on past controversies where he was misquoted as endorsing the use of fraud money in music, stressing that his intent had always been to advocate for more sustainable and ethical funding pathways.
