Women In Nigerian Music Industry Face Disrespect, Says Tems

Women in Nigerian music industry face lack of respect, says Tems. The singer aims to change this narrative through her Leading Vibe Initiative

Women in the Nigerian music industry continue to battle systemic disregard, according to Grammy-winning artist Tems, who has opened up about her own early struggles to gain respect as a female artist.

In a revealing interview with the BBC, Tems stated,

“People don’t really respect women in the [music] industry.”

She explained how being taken seriously as a woman was a constant challenge when she started her music career.

This experience, she says, shaped her desire to change how women are perceived and treated in the Nigerian music space.

Tems, best known for global hits like Essence and Love Me Jeje, is now using her platform to launch The Leading Vibe Initiative — a project designed to amplify female voices and support emerging women in music.

“I want to change the way women see themselves in music,” Tems said. “The initiative will give women easier access to platforms, a wider audience and success.”

She further encouraged aspiring female musicians to define their own values and boundaries in the pursuit of success.

“Know what you want for yourself, your brand, and your boundaries — what you would or wouldn’t do for fame.”

Tems’ bold stand echoes sentiments previously voiced by other top Nigerian female artists like Tiwa Savage and Yemi Alade, both of whom have highlighted the barriers women face in a male-dominated industry.
