Davido says he will soon leave music to pursue billions after challenging Erigga’s comments about musicians who built their careers without family wealth

Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has said he may soon leave music to focus on building his wealth, following a social media exchange with Nigerian rapper Erigga.

Davido made the remark on X on Thursday, September 3, 2026, while responding to Erigga’s post praising musicians who did not come from wealthy families and had to work for their earnings.

“Shoutout to all the musicians who don’t come from family money and had to grind for every single dollar they earn,” Erigga wrote.

Davido challenged the sentiment, arguing that musicians born into wealthy families could also work hard and earn their success.

“No be we say make your pops no guard o. Shoutout to the ones that came from family money and still grind to the top,” he replied.

The exchange became more pointed when Davido described Erigga’s message as “useless motivation” and called the rapper an “imbecile”.

Davido then suggested that his ambitions may eventually take him away from the music industry.

“No worry o I go soon leave their music for una go make my billions… then that shit gonna be boring AF,” he wrote.

He rounded off his response with a broader question about wealth and hardship, asking, “Deep down, who like poverty?”

Davido’s comments have renewed discussion around the relationship between financial privilege, personal effort and success in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.

The singer, who was born into a wealthy Nigerian business family, has previously spoken publicly about his background while building a career that has made him one of Africa’s most prominent global music figures.

His latest remarks, however, appear to frame wealth creation as an ambition beyond his established music career.
