Actress Blessing Onwukwe has responded to public reactions surrounding her performance as Mama Monica in the hit Nollywood film Monica, which has now surpassed 16 million views on YouTube.

Blessing Onwukwe reacts to Monica role backlash emerged after viewers reacted strongly to her portrayal of a strict mother figure in the production, with some social media users reportedly confusing the character with her real-life personality.

The film, produced by Uche Montana, features Montana in the lead role and explores themes of family pressure, responsibility, and societal expectations within African households.

Speaking in an interview with Punch, Blessing Onwukwe said she anticipated attention from the role but did not expect audiences to personally attack her over a fictional character.

She explained that while the reactions were intense, she remained unconcerned as long as the situation did not escalate into anything harmful.

Despite the backlash, the actress described the role as a major boost to her career, noting that it reinforced her belief in her craft and professional direction.

She also used the opportunity to highlight the film’s core message, urging parents not to place excessive responsibilities on their children at an early age.

According to her, children should not be burdened with raising siblings, as each parent is responsible for the number of children they choose to have.

Onwukwe further advised young women to prioritise personal development even while supporting their families, stressing the importance of balance and self-growth.

Reflecting on her performance, she noted that the role was one of her most challenging yet, requiring deeper emotional interpretation compared to her previous characters.

The film Monica, released on YouTube in March, has continued to generate discussions around parenting, emotional strain, and family responsibility in modern society.
