A heavy windstorm has damaged part of the pavilion at the nearly completed Lafiagi Stadium in Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State, raising concerns among residents over the safety of the facility and possible delays to the project.
The incident occurred as the stadium was nearing completion, with a section of the pavilion sustaining significant damage during the windstorm. The development has raised questions about the extent of repairs required before the facility can be handed over and opened for public use.
The reported damage has also prompted concerns that the incident could affect the project’s completion timeline. A report cited an estimated 15 per cent setback, although the figure could not be independently verified.
Residents have expressed concern about the vulnerability of the pavilion to strong winds, with some recalling previous incidents involving structures in the area.
However, the cause of the damage has not been conclusively established. While the windstorm was identified as the immediate event that damaged the pavilion, there is no independent professional assessment establishing that poor construction, design flaws or inadequate materials contributed to the incident.
Youth and sports development advocate from Edu, Aliyu Isa Edu, called for a comprehensive structural and safety assessment before the stadium is commissioned.
Edu said qualified professionals should examine the pavilion’s structural integrity, roofing system, steelwork, anchoring and connections, as well as the quality and specifications of materials used in the project.
He also urged the relevant state agencies and engineering authorities to ensure that any corrective work is carried out according to approved engineering specifications and that the affected structures are independently certified before spectators are allowed into the facility.
According to him, the incident should serve as an opportunity to identify and correct any vulnerabilities before the stadium begins hosting large crowds.
Edu cautioned against allowing pressure to meet commissioning or handover deadlines to take precedence over public safety.
He noted that the consequences could have been more serious if the structural failure had occurred during a football match or another event attended by large numbers of people.
The Lafiagi Stadium rehabilitation is a project of the Kwara State Government under Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq. The Edu Local Government Council had previously clarified that the council chairman, Abdullahi Ndamangoro, was neither managing nor financing the rehabilitation project.
Meanwhile, the Kwara State Emergency Management Agency said it was not aware of the incident when contacted, while efforts to obtain a response from the state government were reportedly unsuccessful.
The identity of the contractor handling the rehabilitation could also not be independently confirmed from the available reports.
For residents of Lafiagi and the wider Edu community, the stadium is expected to provide a major sporting facility for athletes and spectators. The latest damage has therefore heightened calls for a thorough inspection and proper repairs before the facility is commissioned.
Authorities are expected to establish the full extent of the damage and ensure that any necessary corrective work is completed and certified before the stadium is opened to the public.
