Toke Makinwa Slams Men’s Indirect Breakups

Toke Makinwa breakup remarks say some men avoid a direct split and instead pull away until their partners walk out

On Saturday, 20 September 2026, Nigerian media personality Toke Makinwa returned to her short-lived marriage in public remarks that framed a Toke Makinwa breakup argument about how, in her view, some men end relationships without saying so.

Toke Makinwa said she married at 30 and was divorced at 31. She argued that a clean conversation is rarer than a slow withdrawal.

“I got married at 30 and divorced at 31. I don’t even think men have the balls to break up with women these days, they just frustrate you till you leave,” Toke Makinwa said. “That’s their new tactics, they will frustrate you till you leave. A man will never sit you down and tell you it’s not working out but everything about him tells you it’s not working out.”

The claim is personal, not a survey. Toke Makinwa has spoken for years about dating, money and emotional maturity, including advice against marrying in one’s twenties and a highly public split from businessman Maje Ayida in 2017.

Maje Ayida has separately described depression and lost work after that divorce. Neither account settles how most Nigerian men leave a relationship.

What Toke Makinwa described is a pattern many listeners will recognise from other names: distance, changed habits, silence instead of a sentence. Critics will say she painted an entire sex with the brush of one marriage.
