Funke Akindele’s Behind The Scenes grosses over ₦200M in opening weekend, breaking 2025 Nollywood box office records

Nollywood actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has set a new box office milestone with her latest movie, Behind The Scenes, grossing over ₦200 million during its opening weekend.

The film’s distributor, FilmOne Entertainment, confirmed on Monday that the movie achieved the largest debut weekend of 2025, making it the first Nollywood film this year to surpass ₦200 million within its first weekend.

The distributor described the achievement as a five-time record for opening weekends and the highest cinema admission of the year.

Behind The Scenes explores the theme of black tax and features a star-studded cast including Scarlet Gomez, Iyabo Ojo, Destiny Etiko, Tobi Bakre, Uche Montana, Uzor Arukwe, Ini Dima-Okojie, Adebowale ‘Mr Macaroni’, Ibrahim Chatta, Kamo State, and reality TV stars Handi and Wanni Danbaki.

The movie had advanced screenings on December 10 and 11 before officially opening nationwide on December 12.

Announcing the milestone via Instagram, FilmOne Entertainment praised Nigerian audiences for their support, describing Akindele as the “Queen of the Box Office” and thanking moviegoers for filling cinemas and promoting the film.

The movie continues to screen in cinemas across the country.

This success further cements Akindele’s dominance at the Nigerian box office.

Her previous film, Everybody Loves Jenifa, set records to become Nollywood’s biggest opening weekend ever and eventually grossed over ₦1.8 billion domestically, surpassing earlier hits such as A Tribe Called Judah.
