Ayra Starr noted that Nigerian men share traits with men from New York, particularly in their confidence and dedication to taking care of their partners.

“Nigerian men love to take care of their women. They are very supportive of their wife or girlfriend. They are very very confident, so it is almost the same thing as New York men. But you know, men are men. A man is a man still. It is universal thing,” she said.

The singer also acknowledged that despite their positive qualities, she still has her reservations about men in general.

Her remarks come months after she faced criticism on social media from mostly Nigerian men, who argued that her social media feminism advocacy did not align with her behaviour offline.

Critics highlighted her enthusiastic reaction to meeting American singer Chris Brown and her dance video to a song by Naira Marley as examples.

Ayra Starr has also faced scrutiny for her fashion choices, which she addressed in 2023 by stating that her critics are not her “pastor” or “mother” and should not dictate her style.
