The initiative, titled “Shun Examination Malpractice: It Stinks,” was designed to reinforce ethical values as the second-semester examinations approach.

The campaign began at the department’s premises and quickly spread across various faculties on campus. Students involved in the drive held placards with bold inscriptions such as “Don’t trade your morals for marks,” “Earn your grades, don’t fake them,” and “Cheating kills character.”

These messages echoed throughout the university as participants moved from department to department, urging peers to embrace academic honesty.

According to organisers, the campaign seeks to instil a culture of integrity and responsibility among undergraduates at the Lagos State University of Science and Technology.

It was conceived by the Public Relations and Advertising (PRAD) unit as part of a broader effort to promote character-driven education and responsible conduct during examinations.

A lecturer in the Mass Communication department, who observed the campaign, said, “This is more than a sensitisation effort. It’s a bold stand by students to defend the value of education and challenge a growing trend of cutting corners in assessments.”

LASUSTECH, known for its focus on vocational and technological excellence, has recently taken steps to crack down on examination misconduct.

With the academic calendar drawing closer to its second-semester exams, the timing of this student-led intervention adds momentum to official efforts. The campaign does not only address misconduct but also frames integrity as a personal and collective responsibility.

Participants in the campaign were drawn from various levels of study. Many spoke passionately about the damage malpractice does to the credibility of academic institutions and the future of the youth.

Some shared personal testimonies of turning away from peer pressure and choosing to study hard despite difficult circumstances.

“We’re tired of seeing our peers fall into traps of shortcuts,” said one 300-level student. “We want our degrees to mean something, and that starts with writing exams honestly.”

This demonstration by the PRAD unit blends advocacy with education, a model that may serve as an example for other institutions facing similar challenges. By relying on student voices and peer-to-peer engagement, the campaign moves beyond rhetoric to actual behavioural influence.

Observers note that the messages used were particularly effective in cutting through student apathy. The direct language of the placards and the authenticity of the campaigners gave the event a relatable tone that resonated widely across the campus.

The event also reinforces the role of university departments in shaping more than just academic outcomes. It highlights how academic units can partner with students to promote civic and moral development.

In this case, the Public Relations and Advertising unit used its communication skills not only to design persuasive content but also to apply practical strategies for public engagement.

It remains to be seen how the campaign will influence the conduct of students during the examination period. However, its organisers are optimistic. Plans are underway to conduct follow-up evaluations to gauge its impact and refine future campaigns.
