The event, scheduled for Friday, October 17, 2025, at Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos, will spotlight the urgent need for educational revitalisation in Nigeria.

Speaking during a press briefing at the Alumni Jubilee House in Lagos, President Worldwide of the University of Lagos Alumni Association, Engr. Ifeoluwa Oyedele, stressed that education remains the foundation of national development and must be treated as a shared responsibility.

“We are at a pivotal moment,” he said. “If education collapses, every other sector will eventually collapse. Without quality education, we cannot innovate, we cannot compete globally, and we cannot secure a prosperous future for Nigeria.”

The high-profile event will feature Vice President Kashim Shettima as Special Guest of Honour, and Olor’ogun Dr. Sonny Kuku, OFR, as Chairman of the Occasion.

Oyedele noted that while the 55th Awards Night will celebrate excellence and honour distinguished alumni, it also aims to raise vital funds for scholarships and infrastructural projects at the University of Lagos.

These include the upcoming 1,800-bed student hostel, which the association plans to complete within 18 months.

He praised the Federal Government for increased education funding and recent initiatives like the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, but warned that state and local governments, the private sector, and individuals must also contribute meaningfully.

“We call on all Nigerians—government, industry, and individuals—to prioritise education. Invest in it not as charity, but as enlightened self-interest,” Oyedele said.

The association’s focus, he added, includes support for bright but indigent students, closing curriculum gaps, and improving welfare for educators, in a bid to restore UNILAG’s status among the world’s top institutions.

Describing the October event as a “rallying call”, Oyedele urged all alumni and friends of the university to take part in reshaping the future.

“Education is the seedbed of every nation’s greatness. If we nurture it, Nigeria will flourish. If we neglect it, the consequences will touch us all.”
