LASU Strike Ends, Exams Resume Aug 18

LASU strike suspension takes effect Wednesday as staff resume work after agreement with Lagos State Government. Second-semester exams to begin August 18, 2025

The LASU strike suspension will take effect from Wednesday, August 13, 2025, following a resolution by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of staff unions to end the industrial action that began on July 31.

The decision came after a congress held on Monday at Lagos State University, Ojo, where academic and non-academic staff agreed to return to work.

This follows last week’s meeting between JAC representatives, the university management, and Lagos State Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, which produced a payment deal for part of the workers’ salary arrears.

Under the agreement, the state government will cover nine months of the 23-month arrears owed from the 25–35% salary increment, while LASU will pay the remaining three months, with instalments spread from August to December 2025.

Although some workers initially rejected the offer, the university’s Senate on Monday approved the full reopening of academic and social activities. Students are expected to return to hostels on all campuses — Ojo, Ikeja, and Epe — from Wednesday.

The suspended 2024/2025 Second Semester Examinations will now begin on Monday, August 18, 2025.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello urged staff to see the agreement as a pragmatic compromise, warning that prolonged industrial action could harm students and LASU’s reputation.
