LASU Staff Strike Begins Indefinitely Over Unresolved Demands

LASU staff strike begins indefinitely as unions protest unmet demands; campuses shut down, exams suspended, tension rises across Lagos State University

LASU staff strike has officially commenced, as unions representing academic and non-academic workers at Lagos State University declared an indefinite industrial action, effective July 31, 2025.

The strike, spearheaded by the university’s Joint Action Committee (JAC) — comprising ASUU, SSANU, NASU, and NAAT — was confirmed in a letter sent to Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello and made available to the press on Friday.

“The indefinite strike action has commenced in Lagos State University and will remain in force until all demands are met,” the unions stated.

The letter was jointly signed by:

  • Prof. Ibrahim A. Bakare (Chairman, ASUU-LASU)
  • Dr. Sylvester O. Idowu (Secretary, ASUU-LASU)
  • Oluwaseyi Lawal (Chairman, SSANU-LASU)
  • Waheed Majekodunmi (Secretary, SSANU-LASU)

Staff across LASU’s main campus, LASUCOM (Ikeja), and the Epe campus have been instructed to vacate their posts and cease all official duties immediately.

The union’s statement emphasized that the action was the outcome of an emergency congress and reflects the “unresolved grievances” between staff and university management.

The timing of the strike has immediate implications for students. According to internal academic calendars, second-semester exams for the 2024/2025 academic session were scheduled to start next Monday.

The strike threatens to stall academic progress for thousands of undergraduates, with no end date currently in sight.

While specific demands were not disclosed in the letter, union insiders cite issues related to:

  • Delayed promotions and salary adjustments
  • Unresolved welfare negotiations
  • Poor working conditions
  • Failure to honor earlier agreements

This is the second major strike at LASU in the last three years, signaling ongoing friction between staff and administration.

“This is not just about salaries — it’s about dignity, respect, and the university’s integrity,” a union source told our correspondent.
