UNIJOS ASUU Begins Strike Over Unpaid June Salary

UNIJOS ASUU withdraws from duties over unpaid June salary, urging the government to act swiftly or face continued disruption in academic activities

UNIJOS ASUU members have withdrawn their services following the federal government’s failure to pay June 2025 salaries, the union confirmed on Friday.

The chairperson of the University of Jos chapter, Dr Jurbe Molwus, said the action aligns with a national directive from the Academic Staff Union of Universities, which mandates branches to act if salaries are not paid by the third day of a new month.

“Dear comrades, please abstain from lectures and meetings if our salary is not paid by 11:59 pm today, July 3,” Molwus wrote in a message circulated to members.

“The withdrawal takes effect from 12:01 am on Friday, July 4, 2025.”

He stated that the union’s monitoring team has been activated to ensure full compliance. The strike will continue until the outstanding salary is paid.

The branch’s decision also follows a resolution passed at its June 4 congress reaffirming the NEC’s position on salary delays.

According to the union, lecturers who are not paid on time cannot be expected to work under uncertainty or distraction.

The delay, they argue, threatens the academic calendar and undermines staff welfare.

Molwus emphasised that if this trend continues, UNIJOS ASUU will respond with recurring service withdrawals, holding the government accountable for its commitments.

He added that the government’s delay had placed university staff in avoidable hardship and that members would no longer tolerate irregularities in salary disbursement.
