The acclaimed American director, known for reinventing modern stage and opera, died peacefully on Thursday in Water Mill, New York, at the age of 83 after a brief illness.

Wilson was renowned for breaking theatrical norms.

His work combined minimalist staging, intricate lighting, and Asian-influenced movement, creating dreamlike performances that mesmerized audiences worldwide.

He gained international fame in 1976 with Einstein on the Beach, his groundbreaking opera with composer Philip Glass.

Eschewing traditional narrative, the five-hour piece aimed to evoke Einstein’s revolutionary ideas through rhythm, dance, and space-time distortion.

Although celebrated globally, it was in France that Wilson found his true artistic home.

His first major success, Deafman Glance, debuted there in 1971, launching his deep, lifelong relationship with French audiences.

Wilson continued to collaborate with leading artists like Lady Gaga, Tom Waits, Mikhail Baryshnikov, and Isabelle Huppert.

Even after his diagnosis, he remained committed to creating, working until his final days.
