Adekunle Gold reveals year-long struggle to clear Rihanna line for hit single “Coco Money,” crediting Travis Scott and Kanye West in the process

LAGOS, Nigeria, 26 November 2025 — Nigerian singer Adekunle Gold has disclosed the lengthy battle it took to clear a Rihanna line for his hit single “Coco Money,” a struggle that nearly delayed the record for a year.

In a recent interview, Adekunle Gold explained that while writing the song’s hook, something felt incomplete. “It felt empty, and the thing that came to mind was ‘that I have my money right.’

I knew it was Rihanna and Travis Scott, but what we had forgotten was that Ye was also part of that song,” he said, referring to Kanye West.

The line originates from Rihanna’s hit B Better Have My Money which credits both Travis Scott and Kanye West. Adekunle Gold admitted that once he realised Ye had a stake in the record, he knew the clearance process would be arduous.

“I saw a video where J. Cole publicly called Ye to clear a song and that’s J. Cole,” he said, underscoring how unpredictable approvals from global stars can be.

The official green light took an entire year, with every lyric meticulously reviewed and approved before the song could be released.

Despite the delays, “Coco Money” eventually dropped in July and became a standout track on Adekunle Gold’s latest album, Fuji.
