According to the filmmaker, his family spent nine months searching for a suitable donor before his brother volunteered to undergo the procedure.
“My brother gave me his kidney after it took us nine months of struggle to find a donor,” Omori said.
The initial transplant was completed, but the outcome brought a devastating setback when doctors determined that Omori’s body was not accepting the donated kidney.
“After the transplant was successful, the doctor told me it wasn’t a match and my body wasn’t accepting it,” he said.
The failed procedure meant Omori and his family had to begin another search for a compatible donor.
The filmmaker said his family spent a further six months waiting before finding another donor whose kidney was compatible.
“After waiting for another six months, we had to find another donor that could match before it turned out successful,” Omori said.
The eventual transplant was successful, bringing an end to a prolonged and emotionally demanding period for the filmmaker and his family.
Omori also disclosed the lasting impact of the first donation on his brother, who now lives with a single kidney after giving one of his organs in an effort to help his sibling.
“Now, my brother has to live with only one kidney,” he added.
