Taye Arimoro Challenges Guilds’ Suspension Over On-Set Clash

Actor Taye Arimoro challenges DGN, AGN, and AMP suspension, citing procedural flaws and lack of jurisdiction over non-members.

Actor Taye Arimoro has formally contested his suspension by the Directors Guild of Nigeria (DGN), Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), and the Association of Movie Producers (AMP), following an on-set altercation with actress Peggy Ovire during the filming of “Pieces of Love.”

In a strongly-worded letter, Arimoro’s lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, described the disciplinary action as “procedurally improper, legally indefensible, and constitutionally void.”

The letter highlights multiple concerns, including misidentification of the actor as “Taiye Ayimoro” instead of Taiwo Arimoro, failure to provide a fair hearing, and lack of jurisdiction over a non-member.

“Our client is not a member of the DGN, AGN, or AMP. These three bodies lack jurisdiction to discipline or regulate him in any manner whatsoever,” Effiong stated, arguing that any sanctions issued are ultra vires and legally unenforceable.

The letter also cites a failure to disclose evidence and a violation of Arimoro’s constitutional right to freedom of association.

The actor is demanding the retraction of sanctions, a written apology, and public dissemination within 24 hours. Failure to comply could result in a ₦1 billion lawsuit against the guilds and their respective presidents.

Effiong added, “A stitch in time saves nine,” urging the guilds to remedy the situation promptly to avoid protracted legal action.

The dispute has attracted significant attention within the Nigerian film industry, raising questions about the authority of guilds over non-members and the procedural fairness of disciplinary actions in high-profile on-set incidents.
