Nigerian singer Lojay reveals he doesn’t write music, sharing insights into his creative process during a recent interview with Afrobeats Intelligence.

The fast-rising Afrobeats star, born Lekan Osifeso Jr, said he relies on spontaneity and emotional authenticity when making music.

Speaking candidly about his approach, Lojay explained that attempting to write lyrics often stifles his creativity. “I don’t write music. When I try to write, I’ll overtalk.

And I always end up not liking it,” he said. Instead, he prefers to draw from personal feelings in the moment, only occasionally using notes to fill gaps.

For Lojay, the magic lies in being present and truthful. He stressed that songs should emerge from internal emotion rather than external pressure. “Forget what’s happening outside. It’s like, what are you trying to capture?” he advised.

Citing Rema’s hit Soundgasm as an example, Lojay praised the track’s bold artistic choices. “I remember listening to Soundgasm, and Rema starts to whisper in the third verse. I was like this guy understands it… it does feel like somebody should be whispering in my ear right now.”

Lojay’s remarks highlight a growing sentiment among some Nigerian artists who prioritise personal expression over chasing trends. His creative philosophy reinforces his identity as one of the genre’s more introspective voices, focused on delivering music that feels honest and emotionally charged.
