Eniola Badmus Faces Backlash Over UNGA Speech Claim

Eniola Badmus Faces Backlash Over UNGA Speech Claim

Actress Eniola Badmus is under fire after sharing photos from the Nigerian House in New York, claiming she spoke at the UN General Assembly.

New York, USA — Nigerian actress and political appointee Eniola Badmus has come under intense scrutiny after posting photos online claiming she spoke at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) — a claim fans and critics have now labelled misleading.

Badmus, who serves as Special Assistant to the Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives on Social Events and Public Hearings, took to Instagram over the weekend to express gratitude for what she described as a “speech opportunity” at UNGA.

“Grateful to speak at UNGA on innovation, gender inclusion & partnerships for a sustainable energy future,” she wrote, alongside photos from what appeared to be an official setting.

She also claimed to have attended the Future Africa Forum 2025 at The Africa Centre, powered by Afreximbank, calling it an “incredible opportunity to connect and collaborate.”

However, fans and observers were quick to challenge the legitimacy of her claims. Many noted that the photos shared were clearly taken at the Nigerian House (Embassy) in New York, not at the official UN General Assembly building.

“This is the Nigerian Embassy in New York (Nigerian House), not the UN building,” one user commented.

“US embassy for New York don turn UN? Chai, just imagine,” another quipped.

Others mocked the supposed informality of the setting and her outfit — pointing to details like a visible Oriamo phone cord — suggesting the event may have been a side gathering or fringe event unaffiliated with the actual UN General Assembly sessions.

“Where is your audience?” one commenter asked bluntly.

Critics argue that this incident reflects a broader trend of inflated political and social claims** among Nigerian public figures, particularly those with ties to the ruling party.

“APC no go kill us I swear,” one user wrote, referencing her support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) and her role under President Tinubu’s administration.

The actress has previously faced backlash for her strong support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu** during the 2023 elections — support many believe contributed to her political appointment in May 2024.

In May 2024, Eniola Badmus confirmed her appointment as a Special Assistant to Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, marking her formal entry into Nigeria’s political space.

She resumed official duties by July, with several photos surfacing of her meeting high-profile figures like Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Since then, she has styled herself as a public official advocating for youth engagement, national unity, and public service.

In a separate Instagram post this year, Badmus wrote:

“The power to shape our future rests in our hands… Let’s walk in unity, pride and purpose.”

There is currently no confirmation from UN records or independent media that Eniola Badmus was scheduled to speak on the UNGA floor or any official UN side event.

Her mention of the Future Africa Forum 2025, hosted by Afreximbank at The Africa Centre, appears credible as a non-UN affiliated forum held in New York during UNGA week — a time when many fringe and private events occur in proximity to the global summit.

While Eniola Badmus may indeed have participated in a UNGA-themed side event, her framing of the occasion as an official UN General Assembly speech has drawn accusations of embellishment, leaving her open to criticism over credibility.
