The Grammy-winning artiste presented the honour at a ceremony held at the London Palladium on Monday, October 26, marking a notable appearance by a Nigerian musician at one of football’s most prominent award events.

The Socrates Award recognises footballers who use their influence and resources to support humanitarian causes and social development beyond the sport.

Saka received the 2026 award in recognition of his charitable work with BigShoe, an organisation that provides medical assistance to children in need.

His work with the organisation has helped support life-changing medical procedures for children in Nigeria and other African countries.

Speaking at the ceremony, Burna Boy discussed his football academy in Nigeria, which he said he established to support the development of the sport in the country.

The singer expressed hope that one of the academy’s players would eventually receive recognition at the Ballon d’Or ceremony.

His remarks highlighted his interest in nurturing football talent in Nigeria and creating opportunities for young players to develop their abilities.

Named after the late Brazilian footballer Sócrates, the award was established in 2022 to recognise humanitarian and social initiatives undertaken by footballers.
