Biodun Stephen Says Storytelling Keeps Her in Nollywood

Biodun Stephen reveals her filmmaking journey, explaining why storytelling and changing lives matter more to her than financial rewards

Award-winning filmmaker Biodun Stephen has revealed that her passion for storytelling and the desire to influence lives positively remain the driving forces behind her continued work in Nigeria’s film industry.

Stephen shared her perspective during a recent interview while discussing the growth of film production among Nigerian actors and the changing financial landscape of digital platforms such as YouTube.

The director explained that the rise of actor-led film production in recent years was partly influenced by the opportunities created by online platforms, which offered filmmakers new ways to reach audiences and generate income.

“If you talk about actors going into film production in the past few years, it’s caused by the YouTube invasion and there was quite a chunk of money in YouTube. It was like a big money ritual, but it isn’t the same anymore,” Stephen said.

However, the filmmaker stressed that financial benefits alone should not be the foundation for entering the industry, adding that genuine storytelling remains essential to creating meaningful films.

For Stephen, filmmaking is about using stories as a tool to connect with audiences and create positive change.

“For me, it’s about why you are doing it. It’s a massive space and the environment is massive for everybody to fly without touching each other,” she said.

The filmmaker explained that she discovered the deeper purpose of storytelling in 2011, when she realised that films could have the power to influence perspectives and transform lives.

“I tell stories because I think I can change lives, which is very important to me. I came to that realisation in 2011 when I understood that story was powerful, and the onus is on me to change a life one story at a time,” she added.

Stephen also acknowledged the role of audience growth and digital platforms in shaping modern filmmaking, noting that many creators now understand the importance of building strong communities around their work.

Her comments come amid continued changes in Nollywood, where filmmakers are exploring new distribution models, streaming opportunities and independent production methods.

With a career built around emotionally driven storytelling, Stephen continues to position herself among filmmakers using cinema not only for entertainment but also for social impact.
