In a recent social media post, the renowned filmmaker stressed that a child’s financial success should never undermine parental discipline, guidance or authority within the household.

She wrote: “Poverty does not diminish the role of good parenting. That your child is the breadwinner doesn’t mean the baton of parenting is now the child’s, as long as the said child, under the law and your household rules, is still recognised as a child.”

Stephen explained that while life’s circumstances can make children the breadwinners, parents must not abandon their responsibilities or begin to “dance to the tune” of their children.

“Of course, life happens such that the child may become the breadwinner. It doesn’t mean, as parents, we forget our roles in the first place,” she said.

The filmmaker revealed that her remarks were inspired by a documentary she watched, which explored how some parents lose their moral authority once a child begins to provide for the family.

She urged parents to stay firm in their responsibilities regardless of financial hardship or social pressure.

“Saw a documentary that triggered me so, and I see how this plays out here, even on social media. Parents, play your role regardless,” she added.
