The announcement was made in Park City, Utah, on 27 January 2026, marking a historic milestone for Nigerian cinema on the global stage.

Lady, a UK-Nigerian co-production written and directed by Olive Nwosu, follows a fiercely independent female taxi driver whose life changes after joining a close-knit community of sex workers navigating joy, danger, and solidarity in Lagos.

The film explores themes of sisterhood, resilience, survival, and women’s autonomy.

Oruh’s portrayal of Pinky, a sex worker grappling with survival, agency, and unresolved past ties, earned praise from the Sundance jury for delivering “exceptional emotional honesty and collective power.”

Her performance was lauded for its nuance, vulnerability, and refusal to rely on stereotypes.

The award places Oruh among a new generation of Nigerian actors gaining international recognition.

Lady is the second Nollywood film to win at Sundance, following Mami Wata in 2023, and is scheduled for its European premiere at the 2026 Berlin International Film Festival in the Panorama section.

Oruh’s journey to Sundance was marked by perseverance.

In 2025, she worked only twice and nearly left acting due to financial hardship.

Reflecting on her achievement, she said, “Lady is about the bonds that sustain us when everything else falls apart. Playing Pinky challenged me to explore vulnerability and strength in new ways, and working with Olive Nwosu was unforgettable. She is truly an actor’s director.”
