ABC has suspend Jimmy Kimmel Live indefinitely following fierce backlash over the host’s controversial comments regarding the assassination of conservative figure Charlie Kirk.

During his monologues on Monday and Tuesday, Jimmy Kimmel suggested that “many in MAGA land are working very hard to capitalise on the murder of Charlie Kirk.” The remarks quickly drew condemnation from viewers, regulatory officials, and affiliates, especially as political tensions rise across the US.
Nexstar Media Group, which operates 23 ABC-affiliated stations, announced it would cease airing the show from Wednesday.
Nexstar’s broadcasting division president, Andrew Alford, labelled the remarks as “offensive and insensitive at a critical time in our national political discourse.”
Production of the show was promptly halted. Audience members arriving at the Hollywood studio on Wednesday were turned away without warning, and protests gathered outside the venue, demanding an apology and Kimmel’s resignation.
Despite the growing outcry, Kimmel has remained silent. His current contract with ABC is set to expire in May 2026, and it remains unclear whether the show will return before then.
ABC suspends Jimmy Kimmel Live amid escalating regulatory pressure. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr criticised the host’s statements, accusing the show of misrepresenting the political affiliations of the murder suspect, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson.
According to authorities, Robinson had distanced himself from his conservative upbringing and adopted progressive views, including support for LGBTQ rights.
“This is a very serious issue for Disney,” Carr remarked on a podcast. “We can do this the easy way or the hard way.”
Former President Donald Trump weighed in on the controversy via his social media platform, praising ABC’s decision as “the right move.”
The suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live, which has aired since 2003, marks a dramatic turn in late-night television and has ignited broader debates about free speech, political commentary, and corporate responsibility in American media.

ABC has yet to announce a return date for the programme or whether Kimmel will remain as host.
