IK Ogbonna and Rita Dominic defend ‘A Very Dirty Christmas’ film, urging Nigerians to judge it beyond its title after CAN criticism

Actors IK Ogbonna and Rita Dominic have defended Ini Edo’s new film, ‘A Very Dirty Christmas,’ following criticism from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), which described the title as “offensive and disrespectful” to the Christian faith.

In an Instagram statement, Ogbonna, who played the character Frankie, clarified that the title was not intended to mock Christianity.

He emphasised that he, the producer, and director are all Christians and that the film conveys messages of love, forgiveness, and self-worth inspired by the popular Detty December culture.

“Let me be very clear: the title of this movie was never meant to undermine the Christian faith. Many members of the cast are Christians. The producer is a Christian.

The director is a Christian. At no point was this project created to mock, diminish, or disrespect the sacredness of Christmas,” Ogbonna stated.

He appealed for the film to be judged on its full message rather than the title alone.

Supporting Ogbonna, Rita Dominic urged Nigerians to watch the film before forming opinions. “Artists have the right to creative expressions. ‘A Very Dirty Christmas’ is nothing short of that.

I think it’s important to watch the film first before drawing conclusions,” she wrote, encouraging audiences to enjoy the movie with family and friends during the holiday season.

The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has engaged the producers, requesting a modification to the title to prevent offence, while the film continues to screen in cinemas nationwide.
