Uzor Arukwe urges Nollywood producers to offer him diverse roles, saying he is tired of repeatedly playing Odogwu characters

Arukwe made the appeal during an interview on The Creativitea Podcast, where he expressed frustration over what he described as the industry’s repeated attempts to cast him in similar characters.

According to the actor, producers continue to offer him Odogwu roles because they believe his performance in such characters will help guarantee returns on their investments.

“All the producers in Nollywood now want to kill me with Odogwu character. You can’t put me in a box,” he said.

The actor urged filmmakers to take a chance on him by creating different characters that would allow him to explore other aspects of his acting abilities.

He argued that just as a producer had taken a chance on the character that helped establish his popularity, others could similarly trust him with unfamiliar roles.

“The same way someone took a chance on that character, you can also create another character and give to me,” Arukwe said.

His comments highlight his desire to move beyond the type of roles that have become closely associated with his screen persona.

Arukwe’s remarks came after his manager, Mautin Tairu, popularly known as Mr M, admitted that he shared some fans’ frustration over the actor’s frequent “igbotic” roles.

Tairu made the admission while responding on X to a fan, R. Ekpedeme, who had complained about Arukwe’s tendency to shout in such characters.

“Uzor needs to leave the igbotic roles for a while. I need a break from the shouting,” the fan wrote.

The manager’s response added to the discussion surrounding the actor’s recurring character portrayals and whether he should explore a wider range of roles.

Arukwe’s appeal suggests that, despite the popularity of his Odogwu characters, he wants Nollywood producers to look beyond familiar formulas and give him opportunities to demonstrate his range as an actor.
