UNN terror attack rumour dismissed by management as unverified, while new security measures are introduced to safeguard the campus

The management of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has dismissed a viral social media claim alleging an impending terrorist attack and mass abduction of students on its Nsukka campus, describing the report as unverified and unsupported by credible security intelligence.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Inya Egwu, assured students, staff, parents and the wider public that there was no verified threat against the institution.

The statement followed the circulation of a security alert on social media warning of a purported attack on the campus, a claim the university said lacked factual basis.

“The University wishes to state that there is no credible security intelligence or verified threat to the University of Nigeria that supports the claims contained in the post,” the statement read.

While dismissing the UNN terror attack rumour, the institution said it was taking precautionary steps to strengthen campus security and ensure the continued safety of members of the university community.

According to the university, personnel of the Nigerian Police Force and the Nigerian Army have been deployed to strategic entry points to complement existing security arrangements operated by the university’s security unit.

Management also announced the temporary closure of some access gates leading into the campus to improve monitoring and regulate movement within the institution.

In addition, motorcycle operations have been suspended within the campus with immediate effect. Under the directive, motorcycles will not be permitted beyond university gates except those operated by authorised security personnel.

Staff members who commute to work on motorcycles have been advised to park them at designated locations outside the campus perimeter before proceeding to their offices.

The university urged students and staff to remain calm and continue their normal academic and administrative activities without fear.

It also cautioned members of the public against spreading unverified information capable of causing panic, anxiety or disruption.

“Anonymous social media posts and unverified online messages should be treated with caution, particularly when they contain sensational claims designed to generate fear and uncertainty,” the statement added.

Although the university maintained that no known threat currently exists, it encouraged members of the campus community to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activity to security authorities.
