Tiwa Savage admits Dorobucci sounded ‘crap’ at first

Tiwa Savage Dorobucci story has surprised fans after the singer revealed she initially thought the now-iconic Mavin Records anthem was a “crap song.”

Speaking on NotJustOk in a candid interview published Monday, the award-winning Nigerian singer recalled hearing the early version of the track during her wedding trip to Dubai and feeling deeply unimpressed.

“Don’t know if people know this, but Dorobucci—I had Don Jazzy playing that in the hotel when we were in Dubai for my wedding—and I didn’t want to tell him, but I thought it was such a crap song,” Tiwa confessed.

Don Jazzy, the Mavin Records boss, reportedly played the song “over and over again” at the time, though Tiwa had no idea she would later be asked to feature on it.

After her wedding, the producer summoned her back to Nigeria urgently, citing an important new record.

Tiwa admitted she was reluctant, hoping instead to go on honeymoon. But upon returning to the studio and hearing the completed version of Dorobucci, she was shocked.

“I got back to Nigeria… and I was flabbergasted,” she said, adding that she was the last to record her verse. “I was just looking at everybody in the studio, like, do you guys like this really?”

Despite her initial scepticism, Dorobucci went on to become one of the biggest Afropop hits of the 2010s, helping to define the Mavin collective’s signature sound. Tiwa previously had a similar reaction to Eminado, another chart-topping hit.

“I don’t know what Don Jazzy does,” she said, crediting his musical genius. “Shout out as always to Don Jazzy.”
