TikTok Temporarily Blocks LIVE in Nigeria Overnight

TikTok LIVE access in Nigeria was temporarily restricted overnight as the platform investigates safety concerns for creators and viewers

TikTok has temporarily restricted access to its LIVE feature for users in Nigeria during late-night hours as part of a safety review, the company confirmed in an in-app notice to creators.

The notification, received by accounts with at least 1,000 followers, stated: “We’re temporarily limiting LIVE late at night in Nigeria as part of our investigation to ensure our platform remains safe and our community stays protected.”

The restriction affected broadcasts between 11pm and 5am and also prevented creators from viewing LIVE sessions from other countries.

Online showed that previously active LIVE sessions became inaccessible during the affected hours, displaying a “No Access” label.

Despite the disruption, creators retained their balances and previous earnings from LIVE gifting.

Access was restored by Monday morning, prompting discussions across social media as users speculated on the cause of the nationwide, temporary suspension.

Night-time hours are peak periods for Nigerian streamers hosting entertainment segments, gaming sessions, and interactive broadcasts that attract viewers and virtual gifts.

The move follows TikTok’s recent West Africa Safety Summit in Dakar, Senegal, where the platform disclosed that it had taken action against 2,321,813 LIVE sessions and 1,040,356 LIVE creators globally in the second quarter of 2025 for violating LIVE Monetisation guidelines.

In Nigeria, 49,512 LIVE sessions were removed during the same period.

TikTok also reported deleting 3,780,426 videos in Nigeria between April and June 2025 for breaching Community Guidelines, with 98.7% removed before being viewed and 91.9% taken down within 24 hours.

The LIVE feature allows users to broadcast in real-time, interacting directly with viewers via comments and virtual gifts.

To host a session, accounts typically require at least 1,000 followers, users must be 16 years or older (18 to earn revenue), and their accounts must be in good standing.

The platform did not specify how long the review would continue but assured users that the temporary restrictions were part of ongoing measures to maintain community safety.
