Tems gender bias in music experience has inspired her to take bold steps toward change.

In a recent BBC interview, the Grammy-winning Afropop star said she struggled to be taken seriously as a woman early in her career.

“People don’t really respect women,” Tems said, adding that many of the “prices” expected of her weren’t ones she was willing to pay.

Despite Afropop’s global growth, the industry is still male-dominated. While stars like Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Davido top the charts, female voices continue to battle for space.

Tems joins Tiwa Savage and Yemi Alade in speaking up about the industry’s double standards.

In response, she launched the Leading Vibe Initiative a platform designed to give young African women real access to music industry opportunities.

I want to make it easier for women like me to access platforms and success.

The initiative began in Lagos with workshops, masterclasses, and panels focused on skills and mentorship.

“I want to make it easier for women like me to access platforms and success,” she said.

Tems has always prioritized authenticity over fame.

“If it meant me not being signed, I was okay not being signed,” she added.

Beyond music, Tems is now part-owner of San Diego FC, an American football club.

“I don’t see myself as just a singer,” she said. “I’m much more than that.”
