Addressing pilgrims on Sunday, Pope Leo XIV criticised those who fuel violent conflicts and deplete natural resources, stating that their actions undermine global stability and threaten the wellbeing of future generations.

The pontiff’s remarks coincided with the 40th anniversary of the Chornobyl nuclear disaster, which he referenced as a sobering reminder of the dangers associated with nuclear technology, particularly in times of geopolitical tension.

Pope Leo XIV described the 1986 tragedy as a “stark warning” for the modern world, urging renewed caution and responsibility in the handling of atomic energy amid ongoing global conflicts.

“I hope that at all decision-making levels, wisdom and responsibility always prevail, so that atomic power can always be used to support life and peace,” he said.

Expanding his message, Pope Leo XIV also condemned what he described as destructive patterns of consumerism and prejudice, arguing that they contribute significantly to global instability alongside armed conflict.

He warned that the combination of war, environmental neglect and social division continues to erode the foundations of peace, calling for a renewed commitment to justice, restraint and moral responsibility among world leaders.
