Osamede Movie Release Promises Epic Cultural Triumph

Osamede movie release is set for October 17, bringing a powerful blend of myth, history and female strength from Benin to Nigerian cinemas.

The release of Osamede movie is poised to make waves when it opens nationwide in Nigeria on 17 October, according to acclaimed actress‑producer Ivie Okujaye.

The announcement, shared via her verified Instagram, emphasised a return to cultural heritage and ancestral narratives.

“The beauty of culture lies in what our ancestors left us!” her post read, adding: “Osamede comes from the heart of the Benin Kingdom, a story about a young woman who dares to change everything, drawing strength from the legacy of her people.”

Produced by Lilian Olubi under Gold Lilies Global Services and directed by AMVCA‑winning filmmaker James Omokwe, Osamede is the result of bold ambition and deep respect for Benin traditions.

The film stars Okujaye in the title role, supported by Lexan Aisosa Peters, William Benson, Tosin Adeyemi, Etinosa Idemudia, and veteran filmmaker Lancelot Oduwa Imasuen.

Shot on location in Benin City, the film’s plot is set against the tense, historical backdrop of the 1897 British invasion of the Benin Kingdom.

The story follows Osamede—an orphaned girl who discovers she possesses supernatural power through the Aruosa stone, a sacred relic said to originate from the deity Osanobua.

Her journey intertwines resistance, betrayal, identity and destiny.

Before its theatrical release, Osamede already attracted attention on the international stage.

It previewed at the Cannes Film Market on 17 May, screened in the Pavillon Afriques section.

The project has been widely praised as a landmark in African historical fantasy—attempting to reclaim indigenous mythology while delivering cinematic spectacle.

A teaser released earlier this year hinted at the film’s tone: “She’s the chosen one. Her power awakens.” The visuals emphasised both mysticism and epic scope, promising audiences an immersive cultural experience.

With its October release, Osamede movie release is expected to ignite renewed conversations around how African history is represented in film.

As Nollywood increasingly steps into global genre storytelling, this epic may well evolve into a benchmark for ambition, mythology, and cinematic identity in African cinema.
