Nicki Minaj and SZA have stunned fans with a fiery online exchange, reigniting tensions within the music industry as both artists hurled brutal insults on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

The unexpected spat began on Tuesday, 15 July, when SZA posted a cryptic message: “Mercury retrograde .. don’t take the bait lol silly goose.”

While many interpreted it as a harmless post, Nicki Minaj interpreted it as a veiled dig.

The rapper swiftly responded with direct shots, referencing Terrence “Punch” Henderson, president of Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE), and dragging Roc Nation CEO Desiree Perez into the conversation.

“Y’all remember that man from TDE who kept bullying me on Twitter for no reason? We have the receipts,” Minaj posted. She mockingly nicknamed him “Minus 30 million” and later added, “Tiny D–k Executive.”

SZA quickly responded, claiming her tweet had no connection to Minaj. “I wasn’t even talking about or to anyone… N—AS @’d ME. The F–K YES IM MAD NOW DO YOU NEED THAT !??” she snapped.

Nicki Minaj did not let it rest. She fired back, saying, “Go draw your freckles back on bookie. Sounding like a fucking dead dog,” further using the hashtags JusticeForDemoree and DepositionPerez—alluding to the high-profile lawsuit involving Desiree Perez and her daughter, Demoree Hadley, who claimed she was unlawfully institutionalised.

The feud escalated as fans rallied behind both artists.

While Minaj’s infamous Barbz fanbase defended her ferociously, SZA remained unfazed. She addressed the backlash confidently, reminding followers of her recent tour achievements.

“I stepped out onna packed stadium tour where people show me REAL love. IN REAL LIFE,” she wrote, adding that she is at “the most successful I’ve ever been.”

SZA then highlighted the success of her SOS Tour, which grossed over $95 million in 2023 and placed in the top five highest-grossing R&B tours of the year.

The 2024 leg brought in an additional $41.5 million. Her ongoing Grand National Tour with Kendrick Lamar has further solidified her place among R&B’s elite performers.

As the exchange continued, Minaj remained aggressive. “Bi–i looking & sounding like she got stung by a fucking bee,” she posted.

Later, she added, “Shut up ugly… I’m in a meeting so idk if u was still talking s–t or not so if you didn’t I’ll delete later. Hoe.”

SZA appeared to bow out graciously, tweeting, “Lmao lemme go back to being calm shy and meek. Y’all have a blessed night! See you tomorrow for night 2 Paris!!”

Despite the drama, many fans have called for both stars to shift focus back to their music.

The feud also sparked wider conversations online about the pressures of fame, the toxicity of fanbases, and how female artists are often pitted against each other in the industry.

“She’s hurt, she’s human, and she’s got her reasons,” one fan posted in SZA’s defence. “But the internet doesn’t let you breathe.”
