Lizzo sued for allegedly sampling 70s song illegally

Lizzo sued for allegedly sampling a 70s song without permission, though her team claims the track isn’t registered under any US copyright body.

Lizzo is facing a new legal battle after being accused of sampling a 1970s track, Win or Lose, without obtaining permission from the rights holders.

The lawsuit, filed by The GRC Trust, claims that the American singer unlawfully used elements of the vintage song, leading to financial losses for the original creators.

The track, initially released in the 1970s, regained public attention decades later after featuring in an American Eagle commercial starring actress Sydney Sweeney.

According to court documents, the plaintiffs allege that Lizzo incorporated parts of Win or Lose into her own work without authorisation, thereby breaching copyright laws and profiting from the use.

However, representatives for the Grammy-winning artist have denied any wrongdoing, insisting that the disputed song is not registered under any copyright or royalty societies in the United States.

“We are surprised that The GRC Trust filed this lawsuit,” Lizzo’s team said in a statement. “To be clear, the song has never been commercially released or monetised, and no decision has been made at this time regarding any future commercial release of the song.”

The case adds to a growing list of copyright disputes in the global music industry, where questions over sampling, licensing, and ownership have become increasingly contentious in the age of digital production.

While Lizzo has not publicly commented on the lawsuit, her representatives maintain that there is no legal basis for the claim, describing it as premature and unfounded.
