Akindele’s Latest Film Sparks Record Traffic, Knocks Streaming Service Offline

Funke Akindele streaming outage follows huge demand for her film, overwhelming Kava TV and disrupting services temporarily

Nigerian filmmaker Funke Akindele has triggered a massive surge in online viewership after the release of her latest project Behind The Scenes, causing a temporary outage on streaming platform Kava TV.

The disruption occurred as the film gained rapid popularity, ranking number one on Netflix for African audiences in Nigeria while also leading on Kava TV for international viewers.

In a statement posted on Instagram on Sunday, Kava TV attributed the outage to unprecedented traffic levels following the film’s release.

“We’re currently experiencing a record-breaking surge in traffic following the release of Behind The Scenes and it’s putting temporary pressure on our servers,” the platform said.

The incident underscores the growing global appeal of Nollywood productions, with Funke Akindele’s latest success drawing thousands of viewers simultaneously and placing significant strain on digital infrastructure.

Kava TV said its technical team worked intensively to restore services, assuring users that capacity upgrades were underway to handle the spike.

“Our technical team is fully on it, working around the clock to scale capacity and restore a smooth, high-quality experience across the platform,” the company added.

The platform later confirmed that services had stabilised, thanking users for their overwhelming response.

“To the thousands of you who tried to enter KAVA at the exact same second, your love is massive! We’ve cleared the road, and the app is back up,” it said.

Behind The Scenes has recorded impressive commercial success across multiple markets. The film grossed £159,000 in the United Kingdom and Ireland, emerging as the highest-grossing Nollywood release in those territories.

Distributed by FilmOne Entertainment, the production also earned N2.7 billion at the Nigerian box office, placing it among the industry’s top-performing titles.

The film features a strong ensemble cast including Scarlet Gomez, Iyabo Ojo, Destiny Etiko, Tobi Bakre, Uzor Arukwe and Mr Macaroni.

The latest milestone adds to Funke Akindele’s powerful run of box office hits, following Omo Ghetto: The Saga and A Tribe Called Judah, both of which achieved record-breaking success and cemented her position as one of Nollywood’s most influential filmmakers.
