Fireboy DML reveals why he has no scandals

Fireboy DML explains why he has avoided scandals, saying he keeps his private life away from the public and lets his music speak for him

Nigerian singer Adedamola Adefolahan, popularly known as Fireboy DML, has explained how keeping his private life away from the public has helped him maintain a relatively controversy-free career.

The Afrobeats star made the disclosure during a recent interaction with fans while discussing his personality, public image and approach to music.

Fireboy said he deliberately limits the amount of personal information he shares, arguing that the strategy leaves people with little material to misinterpret or turn into controversy.

“They don’t know me enough to misunderstand me. I don’t give them enough personality or insight into my personal life,” he said.

The singer added that he has deliberately stayed away from the kind of relationships, public clashes and publicity tactics that can generate unwanted headlines in the entertainment industry.

“I don’t have scandals, I don’t relate with other artistes, I don’t sell my music with gimmicks,” Fireboy said.

His comments offer an insight into a public image that has largely been built around his music rather than constant exposure to his personal life.

Unlike some entertainers who regularly use social media disputes, celebrity relationships or public controversies to maintain visibility, Fireboy said he prefers to keep the focus on his artistry.

That approach has also allowed the singer to maintain a degree of separation between his celebrity status and his private affairs.

Fireboy’s comments come as he continues to develop his career following the release of several successful projects and collaborations since breaking into the Nigerian music scene.

He emerged under YBNL Nation and became widely recognised after the release of his debut album, Laughter, Tears & Goosebumps, in 2019. The project included songs such as “Jealous” and “Vibration”.

His profile expanded further with “Peru”, one of his biggest international successes, including a version featuring British singer Ed Sheeran. His subsequent album Playboy reinforced his position as one of Nigeria’s prominent Afrobeats acts.

Fireboy later released Adedamola in 2024, a more personal project that included collaborations with international and Nigerian musicians. Apple Music currently lists the album among his major releases alongside Laughter, Tears & Goosebumps, Apollo and Playboy.

The singer has remained active in 2026, releasing music including “CLAAT!”, a collaboration with Jamaican dancehall artiste Masicka, which was released through YBNL Nation and EMPIRE in August.

He has also been teasing his fifth album, ZUKO!, adding another dimension to his current phase as an artiste.

Against that backdrop, Fireboy’s comments suggest that privacy is not simply an accidental feature of his celebrity status but part of how he manages his career.

The singer appears to view limited access to his personal life as a form of protection, allowing him to control the information available to the public and reduce opportunities for speculation.

His remarks also reflect a broader reality of celebrity culture, where artists can attract as much attention from their personal lives as from their music.

For Fireboy, however, the strategy has been to minimise that overlap.

Rather than using controversy to sustain public interest, he says he wants his songs and artistic identity to remain the main reasons people pay attention to him.

The approach does not mean the singer is completely absent from public conversations. His music releases, performances and occasional personal revelations continue to generate interest, particularly as he enters another stage of his career.

But by keeping much of his private life away from public scrutiny, Fireboy has created a clearer boundary between the person behind the music and the celebrity audiences see.

For an artiste who says he does not rely on gimmicks, that boundary may be central to the carefully controlled image he has built since his emergence on Nigeria’s music scene.
