BNXN opens up on cutting off close friends after discovering troubling things, saying the decision was necessary to protect his wellbeing and career
Nigerian singer Daniel Benson, popularly known as BNXN, has opened up about cutting ties with some close friends after discovering things about them that he felt were not right.
The Afrobeats star made the revelation during an interview with Nadeska on Apple Music’s The Nadeska Show, released on Tuesday, October 6, 2026.
BNXN explained that the difficult decision came in the months following the release of his second studio album, Captain, in July 2025, when some of his personal relationships became increasingly difficult to maintain.
The singer said he eventually realised that distancing himself from certain people was necessary after uncovering issues that troubled him.
“Months after I dropped Captain, you know, I had close friends that I had to detach from or kind of sever the relationships mainly because I discovered some things that were just not right,” he said.
BNXN did not disclose the identities of the individuals involved or explain exactly what he discovered.
However, he made it clear that ending those relationships was not a decision he took lightly, describing the move as important to protecting both his personal wellbeing and his career.
According to the singer, remaining in those relationships could have had serious consequences for him in the long run.
He said the experience taught him to pay closer attention to his instincts, particularly when something begins to feel wrong within close relationships.
BNXN stressed that people should not ignore such warning signs when they arise, suggesting that recognising uncomfortable situations early can help prevent greater problems later.
He added that severing the relationships was ultimately necessary because of the possible effect they could have had on his future.
“You know, so it was important that I had to sever those ties because it could have really cost me and my career in the long run,” he said.
Beyond his personal relationships, BNXN revealed that he was also navigating uncertainty in his professional life during the same period.
Despite describing himself as one of Nigeria’s top eight most-streamed artistes, he said he did not have a management team or a proper support system around him.
The singer admitted that the situation made it difficult to maintain confidence, particularly on days when his professional achievements did not feel sufficient to overcome the challenges he was experiencing.
“Top eight streaming artistes in Nigeria and, you know, at this point I don’t have no management, I don’t have no team, and it’s like, what are you going to do?” he said.
He also reflected on the difficulty of reminding himself of his accomplishments during difficult periods.
“And then it kicks in, like you said, in the bad days, how do you remind yourself that you’re this guy?”
The challenges eventually pushed BNXN to reassess how he was running his career.
The singer said he began putting structures in place and reorganising his professional affairs, a process he linked to the development of his project, Still In Charge.
“I started to restructure, try to get everything in one, in one bit. And that’s where the whole process of Still In Charge starts coming up,” he said.
The experience marked a period of significant adjustment for the artiste, as he dealt with both changes in his personal relationships and the need to establish a stronger professional structure.
BNXN, who previously performed under the stage name Buju before adopting BNXN in February 2022, has continued to build his identity within Nigeria’s Afrobeats scene.
While he kept the details of his former friendships private, his latest comments offer a glimpse into the personal and professional challenges that accompanied a period of transition in his career.
For BNXN, walking away from relationships he believed could jeopardise his future became part of a wider effort to regain control, strengthen his support system and remain focused on his career.
