Don Igwe controversial comments on women and marriage trigger backlash. The singer claims men suffer after supporting wives and questions women’s loyalty.
The comments of Don Igwe have ignited heated debates across social media after the Nigerian musician made bold and divisive remarks about marriage, trust, and gender roles.
Speaking on a recent podcast, the singer claimed that men begin to encounter difficulties in their relationships the moment they financially empower their wives or girlfriends.
“Your problem starts as a man the day you open a business for your wife or girlfriend. The day you empower your wife, that is the day your problem starts,” Igwe stated.
His remarks have drawn strong reactions from listeners, many of whom criticized the statements as misogynistic and damaging to healthy relationships.
Igwe didn’t stop there. He went on to share a troubling anecdote about a Christian couple allegedly married for 50 years.
According to the musician, a DNA test revealed that only the last of the couple’s children was biologically the husband’s.
“I have seen a couple that stayed 50 years in marriage. On the 50th year, the man did a DNA test and found out that only the last daughter was his.
This was a Christian woman, someone you could vouch for,” he said, casting doubt on the trustworthiness of women — even in long-term marriages.
In another controversial take, Igwe attacked married women who continue to use their maiden names.
“You are not married. You belong to your father’s house. Let that your father you are answering his name, marry you,” he said.
These statements have since gone viral, sparking backlash from women’s rights advocates, relationship experts, and the wider public, who condemned the comments as toxic, divisive, and harmful to societal progress.
While Igwe has yet to issue a response to the criticism, the incident has reignited discussions on patriarchy, trust in relationships, and the financial autonomy of women.
Many have argued that empowering one’s partner should be seen as a sign of unity and respect — not a cause for suspicion or strife.
