Enigma Norteno shooting has sent shockwaves through Mexico after Ernesto Barajas, a prominent musician known for glorifying drug lords in his songs, was fatally shot in a parking lot in Zapopan, Jalisco.

The artist, part of the group Enigma Norteno which boasts four million monthly Spotify listeners, was targeted by two men on a motorcycle, who opened fire and killed him along with another man, while injuring a woman.

This violent incident highlights the perilous world surrounding “narcocorridos,” a controversial music sub-genre that celebrates notorious drug cartels.

Barajas’ group is known for songs dedicated to cartel figures like Nemesio Oseguera, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), and “Los Chapitos,” referencing the sons of infamous drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.

The killing of Ernesto Barajas follows a troubling pattern, as other musicians involved in narco-corridos, including members of the group Fugitivo, were recently murdered in cartel-related violence.

Criminal organizations often pay artists to glorify their exploits, but sometimes these performers become casualties in the turf wars they sing about.
