DeeOne Criticises Olu Maintain For Harming Nigeria’s Image

DeeOne criticises Olu Maintain, claiming his hit ‘Yahooze’ glamorised internet fraud and damaged Nigeria’s reputation abroad.

The criticies that DeeOne said to Olu is to maintain his role in shaping Nigeria’s negative image abroad through the 2007 hit track, Yahooze.

The Nigerian comedian and reality TV star made his claims during an appearance on the Echo Room podcast.

According to DeeOne, Yahooze glamorised internet fraud, known locally as Yahoo Yahoo, turning it from a secretive shameful act into a celebrated hustle among Nigerian youths.

Before the song’s release, fraudsters often hid their activities and felt ashamed to be associated with it.

DeeOne stated, “Olu Maintain, great artiste, I love his work, but he is among the people that put this country in a bad light, gave us a bad name.

The whole country started celebrating, and it even had a dance.”

He added that the song influenced a generation, normalising cyber fraud and making it appear fashionable.

DeeOne blamed the track for contributing to Nigeria’s international reputation for fraud, saying travellers face immediate suspicion due to this stigma.

Despite the criticism, Olu Maintain remains an influential figure in Nigerian music.

Yet, DeeOne’s comments have sparked conversations on the responsibility of artists in shaping public perception and the broader social impacts of their work.
