DeeOne Criticises Peter Obi’s Lack of Campaign Spending

DeeOne criticises Peter Obi for not spending on his political ambition, warning sympathy votes won’t secure a 2027 presidential win

Ex-Big Brother Naija housemate and comedian DeeOne has criticised former Labor Party presidential candidate Peter Obi for what he described as a lack of willingness to spend money on his political ambition, warning that sympathy alone cannot win the 2027 election.

DeeOne made the remarks in a viral Instagram video on Saturday, responding to the emergence of the City Boy Movement, a political support group for President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election campaign, which was founded by his son, Seyi Tinubu.

The movement reportedly includes several top supporters of Peter Obi as coordinators and directors in most South-East states.

The comedian argued that Peter Obi must adjust his campaign strategy if he hopes to succeed in 2027, citing reports that some Labor Party agents during the 2023 election were fed by other parties at polling units.

“If you want Mr Peter Obi to do well in the coming 2027 election, let us tell him the truth. You cannot win presidential election with sympathy votes. It may have given him some leverage in the last election, but in the 2027 election, it is not going to work,” DeeOne said.

He condemned the former candidate’s popular “We no dey give shishi” slogan, asserting that financial investment and strategic planning are critical for electoral success.

DeeOne referenced international examples, noting, “In the last election in the US, Donald Trump spent $66 million of his own money. The government is only saying no to vote buying, no be campaign.”

Highlighting the challenges faced by grassroots agents, he added, “People are risking their lives to count the vote. At least they should get something to eat. It was other parties that gave Labor Party agents food and water to drink during the last election. If Mr Peter Obi does not have his own money to spend on his ambition, then he should call his followers to donate and give account of how he spent it.”

The comedian concluded that telling the truth about campaign preparedness does not reflect dislike for the politician, but is necessary for Peter Obi to mount a credible bid in 2027.
