Asa Asika calls Davido the most influential Nigerian under 40, citing his social media reach, resilience and commercial appeal
Asa Asika, Nigerian talent manager and longtime associate of music star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has described the Afrobeats singer as the most influential Nigerian under 40.
Asika made the claim while speaking on The Manager’s Playbook podcast, hosted by Mauricio Ruiz, where he discussed Davido’s career, the Nigerian music industry and the business of managing major African artists.
According to Asika, Davido’s influence extends beyond his music and is reflected in his huge social media following and ability to remain relevant despite controversies that have surrounded his career.
“Davido is probably the most influential person from Nigeria under 40, in my opinion,” Asika said.
The talent manager acknowledged that influence could be measured in different ways but pointed to social media as one of the clearest indicators in today’s entertainment landscape.
“Let’s use the most popular metric today, which is social media. Davido is the most-followed [Nigerian] artist on almost every platform,” he said.
Asika also made a striking comparison when describing Davido’s level of public influence, saying he sometimes jokes with the singer that his reach resembles that of Nigeria’s president.
“I say to him all the time, ‘You do know you’re kinda like the President of Nigeria?’” Asika said.
The talent manager also highlighted what he described as Davido’s remarkable ability to recover from controversies that might have seriously affected another celebrity’s career.
“Some of the things that I have seen Davido do, if someone else did that, they would never ever get back from it,” he said.
Asika said there had been occasions when he believed a controversy could have severely damaged Davido’s career, only for the singer to emerge with his public profile largely intact.
“Sometimes, I’m like, ‘It’s over. I don’t know how I’m going to bounce back from this.’ And everyone wakes up tomorrow and they’re like, ‘Yeah, nothing happened,’” he added.
For Asika, Davido’s appeal is not limited to music fans. He also pointed to the singer’s considerable value to brands, describing him as a “walking billboard”.
“Every brand wants to associate with him,” Asika said.
The manager further revealed that Davido’s commercial appeal has become so strong that brand partnerships have helped support the production of his music projects.
“We haven’t paid for a music video with our own money in ages,” he said.
Asika’s comments offer a glimpse into the commercial machinery behind Davido’s career, where music, social media visibility, endorsements and international partnerships increasingly overlap.
Davido has remained one of the most recognisable figures in Nigerian entertainment since his breakthrough in the early 2010s.
His catalogue has produced major African and international hits, while collaborations with artists from different parts of the world have helped expand his audience beyond Nigeria.
His influence has also extended into fashion, advertising, social media and popular culture, making his public appearances and personal milestones frequent subjects of discussion among fans.
Asika’s assessment, however, remains his personal opinion rather than an independently established ranking of Nigeria’s most influential young public figures.
Social media following can demonstrate the scale of an entertainer’s audience, but influence can also be measured through other factors, including cultural impact, business activity, music consumption and international reach.
Still, Davido’s sustained visibility has made him one of the most prominent figures in Nigeria’s modern entertainment industry.
For Asika, the combination of audience reach, commercial demand and resilience explains why he considers Davido the most influential Nigerian under 40.
The manager’s remarks ultimately underline the evolution of Davido’s career from successful recording artist to a broader entertainment brand with influence extending well beyond the music studio.
