Cute Abiola clarifies he was not shading Kunle Afolayan after comments on cinema box office sparked social media backlash

Skit maker and actor Cute Abiola has denied shading veteran filmmaker Kunle Afolayan following remarks about cinema box office revenue.

Afolayan recently criticised cinema marketing, explaining that he stopped producing films because gross earnings of N1–2 billion often result in minimal personal profit.

His comments coincided with Funke Akindele and Toyin Abraham celebrating N2 billion and N1 billion cinema grosses, respectively, leading to social media discussions.

Funke Akindele suggested Afolayan had been “left behind” in the industry, prompting speculation that Cute Abiola’s motivational post on X was directed at the filmmaker.

Abiola wrote, “Avoid anything that will make you become an old taker,” which many interpreted as a subtle jab at Afolayan.

In response, Cute Abiola clarified the post was personal motivation, not aimed at anyone in the industry.

“Just to clarify, this tweet was not directed at Kunle Afolayan or anyone in the industry. It was a personal motivation… To everyone who picked my tweet as subbing my leader Kunle Afolayan! E NO GO BETTER FOR UNA!!!” he wrote.

The clarification puts to rest allegations that Abiola had attacked the filmmaker, affirming his respect for Afolayan as a mentor in the Nigerian entertainment industry.
