Babcock University student death confirmed by police as 20-year-old IT graduate, Samuel Akawa, found unresponsive by roommates after complaining of illness

Babcock University student death has cast a somber cloud over the Ilishan Remo campus as 20-year-old Samuel Akawa, a fresh graduate of Information Technology, was found dead in his hostel room.

The tragic discovery occurred on Wednesday, when Akawa’s roommates noticed he hadn’t woken up. Despite efforts to rush him to the university’s teaching hospital, he was confirmed dead on arrival.

Confirming the incident, Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, said the case was reported at the Ilishan Police Station. The university’s spokesperson, Joshua Sulaimon, disclosed that Akawa had complained of feeling unwell a day before his death.

“He told his roommate on July 29 that he wasn’t feeling fine but would go home the next day to seek medical attention from his family doctor,” Sulaimon said.

Sadly, Akawa never made that trip.

Security analyst Zagazola Makama shared via X (formerly Twitter) that the deceased had appeared to be in good spirits the previous night, even playing games on his laptop until around 11:00 p.m.

He and others were reportedly on campus finalizing clearance ahead of their graduation.

The Babcock University student death has triggered renewed concerns about student health awareness and access to emergency care in Nigerian tertiary institutions.

The body has been deposited in the university morgue pending an autopsy as investigations continue.

This comes months after a similar tragedy at Lagos State University of Science and Technology, where a 100-level student, Emmanuel Nweke, died after falling from a faulty balcony in Ikorodu.
