Amaka Obasi Fraud Allegation Dismissed by Lawyers

Amaka Obasi Fraud Allegation rejected by lawyers who say Rema’s claims over Lagos home renovation are baseless and purely a civil contract dispute.

Amaka Obasi Fraud Allegation has been firmly dismissed by her legal team, who describe the claims made by Afrobeats artist Rema as baseless and misleading.

Obasi, a creative director with Arden Lifestyle Company, was accused by the singer — real name Divine Ikubor — of misconduct related to the renovation of his Lagos residence.

In a detailed statement issued by Valerian Vianney & Partners LP, Obasi’s lawyers confirmed that she was properly contracted under a Designer Services Agreement that covered extensive renovation works.

These included demolition, the expansion of the property from four to five bedrooms, pool reconstruction, roofing, tiling, POP installation, flooring, and a custom-built carport.

The legal team explained that Obasi had previously completed two successful projects for Rema’s family without incident.

She maintained regular communication with the singer throughout the latest renovation, sharing photo and video updates on progress.

They noted that Rema did not express any dissatisfaction regarding the quality or pace of the work until discussions turned to additional jobs outside the original agreement.

Delays in the project were attributed to design changes requested by Rema, restricted access imposed by the estate management, and rising material costs due to inflation.

Despite these complications, the firm said, Obasi did not seek to increase her professional fees.

The lawyers criticised what they described as the “weaponisation of the law”, saying the Amaka Obasi Fraud Allegation should never have escalated into a criminal matter.

“This is clearly a civil disagreement over contractual obligations. Turning it into a fraud case and involving the police undermines the rule of law,” the statement said.

They condemned the reported arrest of Obasi by the Nigeria Police following Rema’s petition, labelling it a breach of her fundamental rights and an abuse of legal process.

“The allegation of fraud and obtaining money by false pretence is unfounded. The law should not be weaponised to criminalise civil disagreements or used as a tool for debt recovery,” the statement added.

The dispute continues to generate public interest given Rema’s high profile and the broader concerns it raises over the use of police in commercial disputes.
