Y.K Ajao, the veteran Nigerian juju musician born Yekini Kolawole Ajao, has died, according to a public announcement shared in Lagos on Friday, April 20, 2026.

News of the death was disclosed in a tribute posted on the Instagram page of Sir Shina Peters, who described the late performer as both a close friend and brother.

“Still hard to believe. You weren’t just a friend, you were my brother,” the message read, praising Y.K Ajao’s sound, spirit and unforgettable presence.

Sir Shina Peters said the memories of the late musician would be cherished and added that his legacy would endure through his music.

Y.K Ajao went professional in 1973 when he established Y.K. Ajao & His Professional Brothers Band, marking the beginning of a notable career in Nigerian highlife and juju circles.

Although rooted in the traditional juju sound, Y.K Ajao later carved out a distinctive style known as Juju Makossa, blending rhythm and flair in a way that won loyal listeners.

The death of Y.K Ajao is likely to be felt deeply across Nigeria’s music community, where veteran performers are revered for preserving indigenous sounds and live band culture.
