UNILAG Food Vendor Electrocuted to Death

A UNILAG food vendor, Lekan, died after being electrocuted at the College of Medicine, Idi-Araba campus. University authorities confirm the tragedy

A male food vendor, Lekan, tragically died after being electrocuted at the College of Medicine, Idi-Araba campus of University of Lagos on Sunday morning, February 16, 2026.

Eyewitnesses reported that Lekan was disposing of refuse and washing his hands at a water point near a metal railing when he came into contact with the railing and was electrocuted.

Security personnel quickly raised the alarm, and he was rushed to the campus Accident and Emergency unit, but he was later pronounced dead.

The Secretary-General of the UNILAG Students’ Union Government, Joshua Saanumi, confirmed the incident, noting that immediate efforts were made to save Lekan.

Lagos State Police and university engineers visited the scene to investigate, though preliminary findings did not indicate a defective railing.

The University of Lagos management, in an official statement signed by Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, expressed deep sorrow over the loss and extended condolences to Lekan’s family and associates.

The statement urged the public to avoid speculation as investigations continue, reaffirming the university’s commitment to campus safety.
